About Kent, Washington:
Kent was officially incorporated on May 28, 1890 with a population of 793, the second city incorporated in King County after Seattle. It was once the "Lettuce Capital of the World". Kent was formerly known as Titusville, as evidenced by a Titusville Station sign on Gowe St.
The land on which Kent sits is actually some of the most fertile farmland in the entire world[citation needed], all completely paved over and built on with one-story sprawling industrial buildings with miles and miles of roads between them. Up until the 1960s and 70s, Kent was known for its beautiful pastures and green grass no matter what time of year.
The Kent Arts Commission installation of Natural Light by Kathleen Fruge-Brown can be viewed at 524 W. Meeker St., on the east wall of the Kent Chamber of Commerce building, from Dec. 1, 2006 through April 30, 2007. Natural Light, a series of three paintings in vitreous enamel on steel, was created by Fruge-Brown during June and July of 2006. The works were painted from life and repeatedly kiln-fired as successive layers of enamel were applied. Natural Light explores the reflection of light from porcelain-enameled steel through translucent layers of vitreous glaze, and the unique qualities of this medium in responding to sunlight through foliage in thicket, grove, and forest canopy.
Kathleen Fruge-Brown is a painter and printmaker with a long-standing commitment to the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Her work is held in the collections of the Cities of Kent, Seattle, Tukwila, and SeaTac; the South King County Regional Justice Center; the State of Washington; Harborview Medical Center and Evergreen Hospital; and numerous corporate collections, including Microsoft and Safeco.
